The book is talking about a girl name Nikki Maxwell who was with her crush Brandon on a romantic dinner at a Cupcake restaurant and Brandon gave her a heart-shaped cupcake and when they were about to kiss when suddenly Mackenzie showed up from nowhere and the cupcake flew and landed on her hair and when they saw her they were shocked but they kept their cool and left to go the animal shelter. While they were walking, they saw Mackenzie looking at them weirdly and she followed them. When they were at the shelter, they saw a dog named Holly and its pups but Brandon was sad because he could not take Holly and its pups to the shelter so they both decided to take turns to keep 8 dogs in their house but Mackenzie came and threatened them that she will call animal control and all the dogs will be on the streets and this made Brandon scared but they decided to do what. When it was Nikki's turn to watch and take care of the dog and she thought it was easy until the dogs went wild and she could not stop them. It was time for school and she saw her mum at home so she decided to take the dogs to school and find them in the principals office. The dogs made lots of noise that the principal came back from meeting to see that his office has trashed by the dogs but Max Crumbly came and told the principal that it was one of his experiment that got loose and saying that the principal agreed and the dogs were going to be adopted but this made Nikki sad and to thank her they gave her one of the puppies and she was happy especially her little bratty sister, Brianna.
Lessons learnt: Never give up and be honest at all times.

When the animal shelter Brandon volunteers at is too full to take a litter of abandoned puppies, Nikki decides to look after them until the shelter has more room. Simple. There's only one slight problem... her parents won't allow dogs in the house so Nikki has to hide them at home and take them to school in secret.
