The book is about a young boy named Shettima, who was the only son of his parents. At the age of seven years, he got sold into slavery in the northern border of Nigeria.
He was bought by the Sheik of Tulin Goma who had a son named Al-atiku also known as Daishiki. From the moment they met they became best friends, even though Shettima was a slave working on his father’s farm.
One day, while the slaves were working on the farm Al-atiku, the Sheik’s son, came to visit Shettima but was stopped by Matamba ,the slave's supervisor, but Al-atiku insisted on seeing Shettima. This resulted into a fight where Al-atiku nearly got killed but was saved by Shettima and the other older slaves.
Later , Matamba was sentenced to life imprisonment for attempting to kill the Daishiki while Shettima was not only promoted to a traveler's guide but also freed from slave labor on the farm.
As a traveler's guide he was trained on how to do a variety of things like riding camels, donkeys and horses in order to aid travelers on their journey. In the course of doing his job as a traveler's guide he met people from his formal hometown- Birnin-boko who gave him information about his family.
Having met people from his former home town he started thinking about running away from Tulin Goma. Sad events in the palace of the Sheik also contributed to him making up his mind to run away. Unfortunately his attempts to run away were futile as he was captured and almost executed but for the intervention of Al-atiku who not only saved him from execution but also granted him his freedom.
A few years later he married Fatima the maid-servant of Sherifat –the Sheik’s daughter then he went back to his home town of Birinin-boko where he found out that his father had died of heartbreak because of his disappearance.
He was reunited with his mother and sisters after his 20 years of slavery.
